Diesel Engine Fire Pump
The pump that supplies water to some sprinkler systems is called a fire pump. These pumps can be powered in several ways: namely diesel and electric. The water source connected to the pump inlet can be a static water source (i.e. lake, reservoir, tank) or a pipe from an underground public water supply.
A major advantage of diesel pumps is that no electricity is required to operate the pump. It consumes diesel fuel. In the event of a power outage, the pump will still be able to run.
An engine-type fire pump controller may be required for diesel pumps to be activated. The controller receives notifications from fire alarm equipment, sprinkler alarm valves, pressure operated switches and other alarm devices. When alerted, the fire pump controller sends a message to the pump’s diesel engine and the engine starts. Then the pump does its job.
