End-suction single-stage pumps are the most common type of centrifugal pump. The basic principle of a centrifugal pump is that the fluid flows into the inlet of the pump and then into the eye of the impeller. The impeller is driven and rotated by a mechanical device such as an electric motor or engine. The rotation of the impeller creates centrifugal force that directs the fluid along the impeller vanes and pushes the fluid toward the outer tips of the impeller vanes and into the pump volute. The volute is in the shape of a “snail shell” that directs fluid around the volute, which is then separated by a “water divider” or “breakwater”. A water divider/breakwater divides the water between the discharge and the recirculating fluid in the volute.
